Hera Devotional Anthology

Deadline: 30 November 2012

We are interested in a wide variety of pieces, including (but not limited to) scholarly articles, short fiction, poetry, original translations of ancient texts, hymns, rituals, recipes, and artwork that pertains to Hera, her Roman counterpart Iuno (Juno), and her Etruscan counterpart Uni.

We strongly encourage those interested in submitting to explore the many facets of this complex goddess in their work, including but not limited to

– Hera as Queen of Heaven, and the meaning and responsibilities of that position – Hera as Queen of the Gods, and her relationships with other members of the pantheon – Hera as Goddess of Marriage – Hera as Goddess of Women – Hera as the wife of Zeus, and the dynamics of their relationship – Hera as daughter of Rhea and Kronos – a discussion of the relationships between Hera and her children Ares, Eileithyia, Hebe and Hephaestus, as well as Eris and Typhaon – a discussion of Hera’s reaction to Zeus’ affairs, and her relationships with his lovers (eg, Leto, Semele, Io, et cetera) – a discussion of Hera’s relationship with Zeus’ mortal and immortal offspring (eg, Apollon, Artemis, Herakles, et cetera) – compare/contrast Hera, Demeter, Leto and Maia as divine mothers – Hera as the matron Goddess of Argos and Samos – Hera as the Goddess of heroes such as Jason and Herakles – Hera as the Goddess of Cattle – Hera as she is portrayed in the Homeric Hymns – Hera as she is portrayed in The Iliad and The Odyssey – Iuno as she is portrayed in The Aeneid, Metamorphoses, and other Latin works – a discussion of the cow, bull, cuckoo, peacock, scorpion, poppy, and pomegranate as symbols of Hera – a discussion of the origins and meaning of the name Hera (and/or Iuno, and/or Uni) – Iuno as a member of the Capitoline Triad – a discussion of Iuno’s various epithets, their meanings, and their implications (such as Lucina, Mater, Moneta, Regina, et cetera) – the cultic links between Iuno and the wives of various Roman emperors – compare/contrast the relationship between Hera and Herakles, and Iuno and Hercules – a discussion of the iuno and genius, and lares and penates

Syncretisms between Hera and other God/dess/es are acceptable so long as the author clearly demonstrates this syncretism; for instance, a discussion of the differences, similarities and overlap between Hera and Goddesses such as Isis, Hathor, Asherah, Tanit, and/or Frigga.

All works must be original, not public domain. No plagiarism. Previously published submissions are acceptable, provided the author retains all rights to the work. Authors retain all rights to the submission. Upon acceptance, the author will be sent a permission to publish form along with a request for a short biography to include in the anthology.

The editor reserves the right to make any minor changes in the case of grammar, spelling and formatting concerns. The editor also reserves the right to request modification of submissions and to reject submissions as necessary.

No monetary compensation will be provided. Proceeds from all sales will be divided between charitable donations in the name of the Hera, and production costs of future publications from Bibliotheca Alexandrina. All contributors will receive a coupon code which will allow them to purchase three copies of the anthology at cost.

Acceptable length is anywhere from 100-10,000 words, and the submissions period will run from 1 June 2012 – 31 November 2012, with the projected release date of January 2013: an auspicious occasion as it coincides with the celebration of the Theogamilia. VIDEO: 10 films to watch out for, N°10 > Africa is a Country

10 films to watch out for, N°10

Here’s another random selection of ten films to watch (some of them already doing the rounds, others still in production). In no particular order: Lomi Shita (Abraham Gezahagne’s “The Scent of Lemon”), is “set in 1972, in a season of hot political turmoil that started the downfall of the [Ethiopian] Emperor and the mass executions of top officials.” Cast: Elisabeth Melaku, Moges Chekol and Solomon Tesfaye. Ethiotube has the trailer. ‘Lomi Shita’ is screening at the Ethiopian Colours of the Nile film festival this week (Addis Ababa, November 7 – 11). Also showing at the Addis festival is Hisab, a short animation film by Ezra Wube. ‘Hisab’ is a humorous take on the hustle and bustle of Addis Ababa, and has the best opening lines. For those of us not in Ethiopia, the film’s available on YouTube:

Mkhobbi fi Kobba (Fr. “Soubresauts”; Eng. [ballet term] “Sudden Leaps”) is a short film by Leyla Bouzid (who is the daughter of director Nouri Bouzid), exploring a mother-daughter relationship in a Tunisian “petit bourgeois” milieu. The film’s sound score was composed by oud player Anouar Brahem. A fragment (while waiting for an official trailer):

Le Sac de Farine (“The Bag of Flour”), is a film by Kadija Leclere about a young Moroccan girl kidnapped from a Belgian orphanage — where she was placed by her father — and forcibly returned to Morocco — by her father:

Some outtakes from Music and War Stories, a film the SoundThread team made with South Sudanese musicians in the wake of the country’s independence:

The trailer for Sea Pavillion, a short by Marysia Makowska and Todd Somodevilla, recorded in Macassar (a former South African “coloured beach” which sits in between Khayelitsha and Somerset West), featuring South African actors Stefan de Clerk and Colleen van Rensburg. We’ll have to watch it to understand the South Africa connection:

Trailer/teaser for For Those Whose God is Dead, a film directed by Jeremiah L. Mosese (born in Leribe, Lesotho):

And three films that have no trailers yet:

Laan (“Leaf”) is a short film by actress Lula Ali Ismaïl (Djibouti/Canada), also her directing debut, tackling khat abuse in Djibouti. Here’s an interview with the director (in French) about her recording of the film in Djibouti and the obstacles she had to overcome while there — financial troubles, mostly.

Kenyan Hawa Essuman’s film project Djin, chronicling the clash between a coastal village’s old mythologies and new developments, received a €25,000 prize for the film’s production at the African Film Festival of Cordoba in Spain recently. Details on the film’s website.

And Le Rite, la Folle et Moi (“The ritual, the crazy woman, and I”) is Togolese Gentille Assih Menguizani’s second film about Togolese rituals. Her first film, Itchombi, spoke about male initiation. In her new film she documents ‘Akpéma’ — a ritual ceremony in the Kabyé region during which elderly women teach young girls how to become “dignified and mature” women.

(This week’s list of 10 included, we’ve arrived at 100 new films to watch. Recap: 1-10, 11-20, 21-30, 31-40, 41-50, 51-60, 61-70, 71-80, 81-90, 91-100. More next week.)

VIDEO: Ben Okri

BEN OKRI

<p>Ben Okri @ 5x15 from 5x15 on Vimeo.</p>

Ben Okri talks about poetry, words and what they mean to him.

Ben Okri is a Nigerian poet and novelist considered one of the finest African writers within the postcolonial tradition. In 1991 he was awarded the Booker prize for his novel The Famished Road, the first in a trilogy of novels. Other recent fiction includes Astonishing the Gods (1995) and Dangerous Love (1996), which was awarded the Premio Palmi (Italy) in 2000. His latest novels are In Arcadia (2002) and Starbook (2007). A collection of poems, An African Elegy, was published in 1992, and an epic poem, Mental Flight, in 1999. He published a collection of essays, A Way of Being Free, in 1997. Ben is a Vice-President of the English Centre of International PEN, a member of the board of the Royal National Theatre, and was awarded an OBE in 2001. In 2009 he published Tales of Freedom bringing together poetry and story. His latest book is Wild, his first collection of poetry in more than a decade.

Ben Okri on his

'difficult apprenticeship'

In CNN's African Voices, the Booker Prize winning author of 'The Famished Road', Ben Okri, reminisces about his time sleeping rough on the streets of London, unable to finish university, hungry and seeking the warmth of back doors to crouch in. It was difficult getting food and shelter, but "you could always get books" so he did a lot of intense reading because, "By then, I'd already become infected by the creative dream." He got to see London from "a most heartbreaking perspective". Looking back, the celebrated author reflects that his mother would have been horrified to know her son went through low times. However, "If she were here, I'd like to say to her: it was a good thing. It was a good thing."

"It is not important for me as a writer that you leave a piece of writing of mine with either an agreement or even a resonance with what I have said... The best writing is not about the writer, the best writing is absolutely not about the writer, it's about us, it's about the reader."

HISTORY: The Lynching of Michael Donald > Soul Controlin'

The lynching of

Michael Donald

Michael Donald was born in Mobile, Alabama, in 1962. He attending a local trade school and worked part-time at the Mobile Press Register.

In 1981 the trial of Josephus Andersonan, an African American charged with the murder of a white policeman, took place in Mobile. At the end of the case the jury was unable to reach a verdict. This upset members of the Ku Klux Klan who believed that the reason for this was that some members of the jury were African Americans. At a meeting held after the trial, Bennie Hays, the second-highest ranking official in the Klan in Alabama said: “If a black man can get away with killing a white man, we ought to be able to get away with killing a black man.”

On Saturday 21st March, 1981, Bennie Hays’s son, Henry Hays, and James Knowles, decided they would get revenge for the failure of the courts to convict the man for killing a policeman. They travelled around Mobile in their car until they found nineteen year old Donald walking home. After forcing him into the car Donald was taken into the next county where he was lynched.

A brief investigation took place and eventually the local police claimed that Donald had been murdered as a result of a disagreement over a drugs deal. Donald’s mother, Beulah Mae Donald, who knew that her son was not involved with drugs, was determined to obtain justice. She contacted Jessie Jackson who came to Mobile and led a protest march about the failed police investigation.

Thomas Figures, the assistant United States attorney in Mobile, managed to persuade the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to look into the case. James Bodman was sent to Mobile and it did not take him long to persuade James Knowles to confess to the killing of Michael Donald.

In June 1983, Knowles was found guilty of violating Donald’s civil rights and was sentenced to life imprisonment. Six months later, when Henry Hays was tried for murder, Knowles appeared as chief prosecution witness. Hays was found guilty and sentenced to death.

With the support of Morris Dees and Joseph J. Levin at the Southern Poverty Law Centre (SPLC), Beulah Mae Donald decided that she would use this case to try and destroy the Ku Klux Klan in Alabama. Her civil suit against the United Klans of America took place in February 1987. The all-white jury found the Klan responsible for the lynching of Michael Donald and ordered it to pay 7 million dollars. This resulted the Klan having to hand over all its assets including its national headquarters in Tuscaloosa.

After a long-drawn out legal struggle, Henry Hayes was executed on 6th June, 1997. It was the first time a white man had been executed for a crime against an African American since 1913.

Lianne La Havas

Strikes All the Right Chords

Posted: 08/16/2012

2012-08-15-lianne.jpg

Growing up, Lianne La Havas' parents introduced her to a variety of artists who would play a prominent role in her blossoming as a musician, including Charlie Parker, Louis Armstrong, Jill Scott and Mary J. Blige. She wrote her first song at age 11 and began playing the guitar at 18. Now 22, the English folk-soul singer of Jamaican and Greek descent calls a converted church in East London her home, but is commanding the attention of audiences around the world with her telling, vibrato-rich voice.

You might not be familiar with La Havas yet, but you will be soon. Her signature look includes a side-swept poof of hair, pleated skirt and combat boots.

Her speaking voice has a strikingly calm and modest pitch to it, which is quite different from the rawness exuded in many of her songs. La Havas' sound is sure to be compared to a range of singers, including Adele, Sade, and even Lauryn Hill. Her lyrics are reminiscent of a younger Fiona Apple, unapologetically bruised and even bewildered at times by the gravity of love.

Despite the similarities between Lianne and her counterparts, however, there is still something uniquely particular about the young singer. You can hear it in her voice as she coyly belts out the song "Age" during the Black Cab Sessions, in her seemingly quiet onstage presence on Later ...with Jools Holland that catapulted her buzz onto the American scene, and in lyrics like "You broke me and taught me to truly hate myself unfold me and teach me how to be like somebody else," it is clear that La Havas is more than just a kitschy, overproduced, pop charts singer. She is giving us a piece of herself, with every melody.

Her debut album's title, Is Your Love Big Enough? -- suggests much of what she is seeking in the album: love in spite of age, distance, and even disappointment. I chatted with the singer about her passion for music, her jam session with a legend and what she hopes to accomplish in the years to come.
What sparked your love of music?

I guess music itself -- being exposed to it from a young age and just having the opportunity to discover the world of playing instruments, singing and actually being involved in music made me realize it was one of my favorite things to do. Once I realized that, the love was nonstop from there.

How do you approach creating a song?

There are many ways I approach a song. Maybe I'll start on the guitar with a couple of chords and find a rhythm that I like playing, then add lyrics to that, or, my producer will be on the piano, and we'll collaborate that way. Sometimes I have the lyrics from a story in my life, but not necessarily a melody or any chords, so I'll add on something and put the lyrics or chord progression to it.

Your songs are so personal, and you do not shy away from the theme of unrequited love. What does being vulnerable in your songs provide you with as an artist?

It's very cathartic. It makes me feel really, really good. Singing for me is like having a hobby, but, it's not just any old hobby, it's your favorite thing, ever. It is really the only thing that makes me truly happy. So yes, in many ways, it's cathartic, fun, and telling of an experience, even a very painful one. There are so many ways that you can use music to help you just get things out.

You are currently touring in the U.S. Have you noted any differences in how American audiences receive your music vs. your British fans?

I find that American audiences are a bit more vocal about how they feel about you (giggles). During the song they are very encouraging, but British people have a bit more reserve during the song and then they erupt at the end. It's not a particular criticism at all of either group. I'm looking forward to learning more about the American audience on my upcoming tour. I'm also going on a UK tour in October, and that will be the biggest one to date.

Which artist would you love to collaborate with?

Erykah Badu. She's just so amazing. I'd love to sing with her, or I'd play guitar and she could sing. That would be really lovely.

I read that you had a jam session with the almighty Prince himself. What was that like?

It was really surreal. It was amazing, but I had to get over the fact that it was Prince. It took me about an hour to get used to the idea that it was really him. He was absolutely lovely, really funny and just so cool. We talked at length about all kinds of things, but mainly how we felt about music, the writing the process, and artists that we like. Then we played guitar together for hours. I was really honored. He just said just keep doing what you are doing and be yourself-- sort of like an honesty is the best policy kind of thing. He was very, very encouraging and complimentary. I couldn't have asked for a better experience.

Ten years from now, what do you hope your music has done for the world?

I hope that I'm still doing this, and that I'm still moving people 10, 20, and 30 years from now. I'd love to just keep singing and writing music for the rest of my life. If I could be a music producer and help someone who is in my position now, to promote his or her sounds and incorporate music in an interesting way for an album, that would be nice. I'd also like to win a Grammy, of course.

I assured Lianne that her last hope is not that far-fetched, to which she humbly replied, "Oh gosh, I do hope so."

Her album is available now, on iTunes

    1. Nomination Rounds (October 9th – November 27th)

During the nomination rounds, the public can read the stories and you can edit your personal information and enhance your public profile page in order to improve your chances of winning a nomination. Readers can submit written reviews or quick star-reviews.

After each of the eight nomination rounds, the best-ranked Entry will win a nomination. The name of the nominee will be announced through our site and in an email newsletter.

Ranking factors: The eBookMall ranking is determined using over ten distinct factors, including user reviews, results of reviews, positive and negative social media mentions (Facebook, Twitter) and online news articles about the Entry. Ranking will be visible on the contest website and is updated regularly.

One week before the end of the nomination rounds, the possibility to submit new stories will be closed.

        2. Wildcards

During the nomination rounds, the jury will select four Entries for a wildcard. This means four stories which were not selected by the public/readers will get a nomination for the finals.

          3. Finals: Battle Round (December 5th – December 11th)

The 12 Entries / nominees (eight from nomination rounds, four wildcards) will be positioned against each other in the ‘Battle Round’. The visitors of the contest website can vote for their favorite Entry / nominee. The three nominees with the highest score will make it into the Jury Finals.

We reserve the right to exclude the votes of any visitor who votes more than one time per category during the Finalist Period. We will not accept votes intended to subvert the voting process or those generated by script, macro, or other automated means. Finalists are prohibited from obtaining votes by any fraudulent or inappropriate means, including without limitation offering prizes or other inducements to members of the public.
