Cave Canem Fellows Read

Cave Canem fellows Duriel Harris, M. Ayodele Heath & Khadijah Queen read from their new books of poetry. Nick Flynn calls Harris's collection Amnesiac (Sheep Meadow, 2010) "Wildly, thrillingly experimental...[it] navigates not only the ether and the subterranean, but the ground where we all live." Thomas Lux describes the poetry of Heath's Otherness (Brick Road, 2011) as "fierce," "tender," and "generous of heart and spirit." Khadijah Queen's Black Peculiar won the 2010 Noemi Book Award for Poetry. Reception & book signging to follow. Free & open to the public. Wheelchair accessible.

Join Cave Canem fellow Marcus Jackson for a reading & reception to celebrate the release of his debut collection of poetry, Neighborhood Register (CavanKerry, 2011). Cave Canem at the Brooklyn Book Festival

Cave Canem acts as programming partner for another year of dynamic poetry readings and panels at the Brooklyn Book Festival, the largest free literary event in New York City presenting an array of literary stars and emerging authors who represent the exciting world of literature today.

  • The Poetry of Loss
    Mary Jo Bang, Michael Dickman, Meghan O'Rourke and Kevin Young examine the ways poems help us cope with and understand losses in our lives. Moderated by Robert Casper of the Library of Congress.
  • Politics & Poetry
    Timothy Donnelly, Nick Flynn, Thomas Sayers Ellis and Evie Shockley explore poetry's capacity for social change role and the role of poetry in public life. Moderated by Camille Rankine of Cave Canem Foundation.
  • New Works: A Poetry Reading
    Albert Mobilio, Aimee Nezhukumatathil, and Matthew Rohrer read from their recently published volumes of poetry. Introduced by Joseph O. Legaspi of Kundiman.
  • Poet Laureates Past & Present
    Tina Chang (Brooklyn Poet Laureate), Justin Long-Moton (New York Youth Poet Laureate), Mark Strand (US Poet Laureate 1990-1991) and Jean Valentine (New York State Poet Laureate) read from their work. Introduced by Alice Quinn of the Poetry Society of America.

Cave Canem at the DUMBO Arts Festival

Cave Canem presents a weekend of exciting events in their Brooklyn loft during the annual DUMBO Arts Festival, a feast for the senses that attracts 200,000 visitors with the participation of over 500 artists from a variety of disciplines, offering indoor and outdoor art installations, performance and video art, open studio tours, live concerts, instrument workshops, dance, poetry readings, unique family programming and much more.

    How to Paint a Picture: An Art Opening

    Cave Canem kicks off the DUMBO Arts Festival with a reception to celebrate the opening of How to Paint a Picture an exhibition by Cave Canem poet and artist JoAnne McFarland. The multi-media exhibit will feature oil paintings, video installations, and collaborative poetic work by E.J. Antonio, Rachel Eliza Griffiths, Robin Coste Lewis and Kamilah Aisha Moon.

    Poetry Meets Prose

    A reading featuring the combined talents of acclaimed poet and novelist Sapphire, reading selections from her new novel, The Kid (Penguin, 2011), and award-winning poet Tracy K. Smith, reading from her third collection of poetry, Life on Mars (Graywolf Press, 2011), called "vital and incomparable" by Terrance Hayes. Reception & book signing to follow.

    Queen of Folk: A Reading with Samantha Thornhill

    Cave Canem poet and fiction writer Samantha Thornhill will read and recite from Odetta: Queen of Folk, an illustrated poetry book for young adult and adult readers. Reception & book signing to follow.
