PRESS RELEASE: NORTH TEXAS YOUTH SET TO TAKE HOLLYWOOD BY STORM!
On July 19th - 25th 2010 North Texas will send 6 teens to represent the DFW metroplex at The 13th Annual Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Slam Championships in Los Angeles Ca. This event selects 50 of the top teen poetry slam programs from all over the world to compete for the title of International Youth Poetry Slam Champions.
Spear headed by Renown National Performance Poet and East Texas Native. Michael Guinn, the team has been meeting weekly for over a year in preparation of a north texas wide competition April 15th, which will help select 6 of DFW's best youth poets. Those poets are Auymen Rahim, Jennifer SPotts, Catlin Woodall, Asia York, Daniella WIllis, Ades Giwa-Bello. The competition was be held at the South Dallas Cultural Center 3400 Fitzhugh In Dallas from 6:30 to 9PM. It was a free family friendly event. The age ranges for contestants are 13 to 19. Teen poets from as far away as washington dc are vying to be apart of this year's FIRST EVER YOUTH TEAM!
This International Competition was created by Youth Speaks.Org as a creative way of mentoring young minds to appreciate the art of creative self expression via poetry and spokenword competitions. Brave New Voices has been televised as an award winning documentary on HBO as presented by Entertainment Mogul Russell Simmons.
For one week these youth will gather in Los Angeles to attend wokshops, listen to actors, speakers and other notable literary figures in preparation for what is one of the BIGGEST poetry slam competitions on EARTH!
Michael states "that he simply grew tired of our DFW youth not being recognized as progressive thinkers and artists with mind blowing messages of hope and triumph!"
Michael founded the DFW Youth Poetry Slams in April 2009 and holds weekly workshops with youth from all over.
Michael Guinn is also the founder of the Fort Worth National Poetry Slam Team which is one of the top performance poetry organizations in the country. Michael has been appropriately dubbed " The Hardest Working Man In Poetry" due in part to investing his heart and soul in providing a quality open mic experience for aspiring artists for the past 13 years. Voted 2009's Community Mentor Of The Year Michael is the best at inspiring the kids socieity has deemed "unreachable"!
