Jill Lepore talked about her book New York Burning: Liberty, Slavery, and Conspiracy in Eighteenth-Century Manhattan, published by Knopf. In the book she traced the social and political climate of the 1740s, the relationships between slaves and their masters, and the slave conspiracy that emerged during the 1741 fires in Manhattan. The book discussed the lasting impact that slavery still has on American politics today. Following her presentation, Ms. Lepore responded to questions and comments from members of the audience.
