50 Beautiful Brown Blogs:

The Writers’ Edition

This entry was posted in Fresh Daily, on ART, on THINGS by afrolicious. Bookmark the permalink.

This week on Afrolicious.com we’re featuring our favorite blogs by, of, and for all sorts of Brown people. You see, we know the creative web can be a very white place, but if you know where to look, you can be inspired by all things Brown and beautiful. All these links and more are available on the Afrolicious Network as well.

1. New Model Minority is written by my dear friend Renina. She is “a thinker, writer, blogger and current doctoral student at the University of Maryland pursing a degree in Women’s Studies.” But even more than that she is gifted with the ability to take complex theoretical constructs and write them in a way that is both personal and empowering. You always leave her site with a new way to see and understand yourself and your world. You can find her posts on Racialicious and Crunk Feminist Collective from time to time.

2. Jo Nubian writes the most beautiful pieces on personal reflection, relationships and the constant transformation of one’s self. I don’t know how else to describe her writing besides that it is full of love. Even when she is writing the most difficult pieces, you get the sense that she is with you, in her words, reaching out, connecting. You can find her at Clutch Magazine and Ebony as well.

3. Daniel José Older is an amaaaaazing writer. I cannot wait until he publishes a whole book because he knows how to take you for a journey, whether through his EMT gig, or his magically realistic imagination. His stories from the field are thrilling (for me anyway), yet he always gives his patients the dignity their humanity deserves. You can find some of his selected works of fiction here, here and here.

4. Stacia L Brown has the beginnings of a book somewhere in her site’s archives. I read all of them because how could I not? Stacia writes creative non fiction mostly but the fiction she has is refreshing.

5. I Am Nichole Black is home to writer Nichole Black’s work. She is prolific and has that gorgeous UK accent we Americans just love to adore. How do I know this? Because, in addition to her writing, she’s started a podcast to share her thoughts on popular culture, race and feminism against a backdrop of really, good, music. Thanks to @designjuju on twitter who connected us several days ago!

6. Warsan Shire just published a book of her poems titled “teaching my mother how to give birth“. Before her tumblr there was her blogspot, which, though sparsely updated now, holds many gems from this brilliant young poet’s mind.

7. Adventures From the Bedrooms of African Women is a group blog of erotic ecounters… from the bedrooms of African women. It’s delicious. That is all. :)
