National Theatre’s Black Plays Archive's
Inaugural Essay Competition (UK)

We are pleased to announce an essay competition to mark the launch of the National Theatre’s Black Plays Archive. The competition has two categories (postgraduate and undergraduate) each with a choice of two topics:
Essays should be no longer than 2,500 words for the undergraduate competition and 4,000 words for the postgraduate competition and should be submitted by e-mail attachment in MS Word format. Essays must be fully referenced and a bibliography of works cited must be included. The subject line of the e-mail should detail the competition and the entrant’s name e.g. ‘Black Plays Archive Undergraduate Essay Competition, Johanna Blogs.’ Your e-mail should state clearly your name and include the name of your department and university. The essay attachment should state your name, topic and essay word length. Submissions are accepted only from students currently affiliated with Higher Education institutions in the UK. Essays should show familiarity with work included in the National Theatre’s Black Plays Archive and adopt its delimited use of ‘black’ to refer black British, African and Caribbean playwrights produced in the UK.
- Discuss the theme and/or influence of Diaspora in the work of black British women playwrights.
- 'A Cast of One: Black British Women's Monodrama'
JUDGING PANEL: Dr Deirdre Osborne (Goldsmiths University), Dr. Lynette Goddard (Royal Holloway), Gavin Clarke (National Theatre).
PRIZE: The prize for the postgraduate section is £100 in book tokens and publication on the National Theatre Black Plays Archive website. The prize for undergraduate section is £100 in book tokens. The results of the competition will be announced on 4 February 2013
