Writer’s Guidelines

writer's guidelines

Background:
Each issue of AP Magazine contains quality writing and editorial content that deal with issues relevant to the African global demographic, revealing profiles, in-depth features, as well as detailed coverage of special events. Our writers focus on the perspectives of the upwardly mobile African, all the while captioning each article with vibrant and moving pictures that is the staple of JohnnyDeclassic Photography.

While informing and entertaining, we aim to stay ahead of the curve by:

  • Identifying issues and challenges that face Africans within the diaspora
  • Spotlight leaders and entrepreneurs within the communities
  • Showcasing African fashion and culture in all of its glory
  • Providing personal stories that move and inspire

Readership:
The target readership is the savvy, sophisticated, and trend conscious African public, a public that is fairly sophisticated on political and social issues and spans a wide age range.

Articles:
We accept submissions for articles, short stories, essays, and poems for consideration. Preferred length of article should be under 1250 words. We welcome In-depth career articles of major personalities, including social and political figures, authors, and entertainment personalities. Submissions should be sent as a Microsoft Word document with a suggested title and your bio. Please note that we cannot respond to every inquiry from freelance writers, but we will contact you if your pitch or material is of interest to us. Unsolicited material will also be given serious consideration. Please be sure to credit any/all outside sources of information, although formal bibliographic notation is not necessary. Articles are reviewed by the editorial board and may be subject to revisions in order to meet our editorial and stylistic standards.

Graphics:
We welcome artwork and photos. Images accepted for publication must be a minimum of 300 dpi and preferably in JPEG format (although we also accept TIFF, EPS, and DOC files)

Payment:
We currently pay a minimum of $30 for book/video reviews and poems; $50 for short articles, columns or essays under 1250 words; and $75 for longer articles above 1250 words. Contributors also receive complimentary copies of the issue in which their contribution is published. We hope to raise these rates, knowing that good writing merits adequate compensation.
