SPECTRUM is an annual journal of art and literature published by UC Santa Barbara's College of Creative Studies. Founded in 1957, it is the longest-standing literary magazine in the UC system. We frequently receive and accept submissions from several other distinguished universities outside of the UC system, such as Sarah Lawrence College and Cornell University. Over the years, SPECTRUM has published work by luminaries like Alex Ortolani, Jervey Tervalon, Chris Lauer, William Carlos Williams, and Raymond Carver.

The current Editor-in-Chief is Danielle Miller.

 

Submissions this year are open from September 25, 2009 through February 12, 2010.

We accept art, poetry, fiction, and non-fiction works from everyone, regardless of age or school affiliation. Art can be either black and white or in color. Any form of poetry and any genre of fiction is allowed; non-fiction works can range from interviews, personal essays, and creative or scholarly essays. We do not follow themes and no subject will be censored.

The guidelines are:

1. We would like email submissions only. Send all works to spectrum.ccs.ucsb@gmail.com. Paper submissions can still be considered, but we eventually need an electronic copy to edit.
2. Please send manuscripts as an attachment and not in the email body.
3. Poets may submit up to five poems whereas fiction and nonfiction writers may submit up to three pieces. For fiction and non-fiction writers, each piece cannot exceed fifteen pages, double-spaced. Only one piece per author will be published.
4. Names will be removed from each entry before review, so please leave the word name-less or contain it on the first page.
5. Previously published works will not be considered and subsequent publishers should be aware of your publication in Spectrum, though you maintain your rights as an author.

We reserve the right to edit submissions for grammar and length.

Contributors whose work is accepted for publication will receive a free copy of the issue.
