Dino d'Santiago, a.k.a. Claudino de Jesus Borges Pereira, was born in the winter of 1982, in southern Portugal. Son of Jorge Pereira and Andredina Correia, both from Santiago island in Cape Vert, he found in the welcoming algarvian weather the ideal scenery for his first steps in the world of arts.
Coming from a religious family, since the beginning his music was connected to his faith as he performed in several local church choirs and also events for young singers. In 2003 he was a finalist on the RTP tv show "Operação Triunfo".
The following year he began a new journey as he became a member of Jaguar Band, the band that performs live alongside the portuguese duo Expensive Soul. After these enriching experiences, both regarding studio time (more than 40 features on other artists' albums)National and International live shows , Dino felt the need to begin following his own path releasing his first solo album in 2008, entitled "Eu e os Meus".
In spite of being his debut album as a solo artist, the album featured some of the biggest names in the portuguese music industry like Virgul and Pacman (Da Weasel), Valete and Sam the Kid. He also had the priviledge of working with Tito Paris in the song "Mamã".
In 2009, after finishing the "Eu e os Meus" tour, Dino and Virgul from Da Weasel started a new project together called Nu Soul Family. As amazingly as it may sound, after releasing their first album "Never Too Late to Dance" they won the MTV Award for Best Portuguese Act with the single "This is for my people".
More recently, the year of 2011 has also been an important milestone for Dino as Expensive Soul & Jaguar Band won the Golden Globe for best portuguese band. In 2012 Dino becomes Dino d'Santiago and from now on, in this particular project, his music will be more connected to his african roots. "Crioulo" from Cape Vert and portuguese will be his main laguages of expression in this afro fusion with the depth of Fado music.

The way I found out about Dino’s musical prowess was a bit absurd. He was one of the first fans of Caipirinha Lounge on Facebook, and before my trip to Luanda I was looking at the diversity of the site’s “fans” and Dino caught my eye, as Soulmotion is not a common last name. After a quick search on Google and the subsequent browse through his Myspace where I listened to his singles “Não Vou Partir” and “A Curtir o Som”, I was sold. I got the full album. And I can say with certainty that its one of the best soul/R&B albums of the year that’s about to finish.

The brand of soul music composed by Dino & The Soulmotion (his band) is greatly influenced by hip-hop. It’s easy to see why. Before he went solo Dino collaborated with a lot of the finest MCs in Portugal, and his debut CD, Eu e Os Meus, was released by Sam The Kid’s label, Quarto Mágico. Sam The Kid, one of Portugal’s hip-hop pioneers, also features in one of the tracks on this CD, namely “O Nomeado”. Another hip-hop artists that sings with Dino is our well-known Valete, PacMan and Virgul from the Portuguese rap band Da Weasel, and others still. And because of Dino’s Cape Verdean heritage, Eu e Os Meus has a certain island flavor that strongly comes through in a couple of tracks, one of which was composed by that legend Tito Paris.

It was quite difficult to choose just three songs to post here. This is one of those CDs that you can play from start to finish – both the opener and especially the closer, “Amanhã”, are kick ass tracks. It’s one of those albums that I’m going to have to urge you to buy if Portuguese soul is your thing, and even if it isn’t (yet). After repeated hearings before and after my 14 hour odyssey at Charles de Gaulle airport, I figured out that the three tracks that best represented this album’s aural diversity were “Filho do Gueto” featuring Valete (Valete’s lyricism meets Dino’s trademark soul), “Por Ti Eu Espero” (a groovy beat reminiscent of Marvin Gaye) and “Dez Ilhas” (tastes like Cape Verde). And then there’s a hidden gem, a track called Nomeado II featuring Angela Pais, but that’s better suited for a Late Nite Lounge session, coming soon...;)
