“CornerStore”, a critically acclaimed and award-winning comedy film, will begin a limited theatrical run in Atlanta on January 13.

The film features Roger Guenveur Smith, TV’s Judge Greg Mathis, rapper Trick Trick, R&B star Dwele and a cameo guest appearance by boxing champion Tommy Hearns.

A hit at independent film festivals and a surprise box office performer, “CornerStore” was the # 2 film in the country in late August 2011 and had the distinction of being the #1 comedy film in the country on a per screen average. A remarkable achievement for an independent film in a crowded summer marketplace, this Atlanta-bound movie is a crown jewel of entrepreneurial vision in urban films.

“CornerStore” is a lighthearted, down-to-earth comedy, chronicling one eventful day at a convenience store on Detroit’s Six Mile Road. Owned by the Earl Jenkins, the store serves as center stage for an extraordinary day-in-the-life perspective of his son Gerard’s birthday. After his sister Gail, a playful and popular twenty-something leaves aspiring chef Gerard unexpectedly manning the store, the neighborhood dynamics bring the story to life with verve at every plot turn. Narrated by young Mykell, this film will appeal to a wide age range of movie goers with its genuine, punchy and innovative American story of community. The eccentric customers, however, are the real stars of this PG-13 (pending) rated comedy --- including three winos that hang outside the store and serve as the film’s Greek chorus.

I haven't seen the film yet, but I'm getting a Clerks meets Friday kind of vibe to it.
