In New Orleans, Kalamu Ya Salaam is a writer, a filmmaker and an educator. All his life, Kalamu has been motivated by a burning passion for empowering young people with both thinking and writing skills. More than a teacher, he is a mentor who's been inspiring generations of students into finding meaningful paths for their lives through creative expression.

Let's be real: Kalamu is among the very greatest educators, writers, and human beings in this country. As moving and inspiring as this video is, you HAVE to see him in action with young people -- he's even better in person. His friend and co-director of SAC, Jim Randels, is also one of the great educators and people of our time. Spend one day in some SAC classes and you'll know I'm not exaggerating one bit. The teaching these two do and the personal examples they set have helped produced a cadre of powerful youth from New Orleans who are as committed to justice, equality, and education as Kalamu and Jim are. Policymakers in NOLA and DC should be humbled by their work and all they have to teach us about teaching and learning.
Lou, I'm glad you emphasized what the video did not relate.

You know the Policy makers in NOLA, DC and most other entities in charge of resources responsible for public education do not share the same goals as ya Salaam, Randels and other like them. As a result, those policy makers will never be able to accomplish what mission driven, caring individuals can. The relative outcomes of both demonstrate that.

I pleased to have discovered this video and have shared it on my website: http://aalbc.com/authors/kalamuya.htm May I quote you on the webpage?
