After releasing his debut album Stereotype to critical acclaim in 2009 Ghanaian hip hop artist Blitz the Ambassador went back to the studio and the drawing board to come back with something more ambitious.

And Stereotype was an ambitious album, to say the least. It was conscious, lyrically cutting, and musically adventurous. To create this powerful musical document, Blitz assembled his band The Embassy Ensemble to provide the live instrumentation for his songs which ranged in style from hard rock to jazz orchestra bombast. To top the impact of such an album he would have to do something pretty big.
He definitely came up with something big. This May will see the release of his sophomore LP Native Sun and the short film he made to go with it. The film has the same name as the album and it follows a young boy from Ghsna’s countryside on a journey to Accra, the city Blitz grew up in.
The artist explained his motivation for making the film to Public Radio International:
“We have to create other things that will make our music noticed. It’s very difficult to get anyone to buy music today, so it’s more about creating worlds, so if you create a world that other people are willing to exist in, and they’re willing to support it, and willing to spread the word about it, so we are making a short film that’s gonna add another element to the album, and I’m really excited about it.”
We’re really excited about it too, but if “Best I Can” is any kind of a preview of Native Sun the album, he didn’t need to make a movie to grab our ears. That said, Native Sun the movie, which features music from the album, looks like a world we would certainly be willing to exist in and support for sure.
